For those brave enough to handle Alberta winters, this session is proof that an outdoor location that time of year is sometimes worth dealing with the frozen hands and cold toes.
Held not far out of Red Deer, Alberta, this families annual session was our 2020 version. You can see their 2019 session HERE.
Many things may have been taken away this year, but not our choice for finding joy and fun. Confetti and donuts are still to be found. Dancing and music are still here. And in keeping with what my Gram used to remind me, don't forget to have some fun.
This session was held just outside of Red Deer, at the studio in Sylvan Lake, Alberta. Our goal was to have no other distractions in the images and to focus on fun and joy…. so we chose a fun modern backdrop kept it casual. While using mostly natural light, we used a little bounce flash for fill to add a bit of contrast while keeping that background clean.
So, I will continue to remind you…when planning your sessions, rather than starting with locations and wardrobe, ask yourself what emotions you want to bring out in your photographs. Soulful and serious, quiet and reflective, or joy and laughter. And then get creative and photograph that :).
Today we are throwing it back to 2018 when I visited this amazing family at their beautiful home on Sylvan Lake, Alberta. Lifestyle sessions like these are often a series of documenting families in their favourite places to create lasting memories of times spent together.
To me, this is something that becomes more and more valuable as time passes.
If you have been following my photography for a while, you might have seen this family a few times before. That’s because I have been lucky enough to work with them almost every year since 2010! How amazing is that?? I think I will have to do a separate blog post to look back over the last 10 years.
This session was held on their business property, just outside or Red Deer, Alberta. Between the rooftop, inside the shop and in the old truck, we could have shot the session all day!
